Review: Science Day 2025 at VISUS

May 30, 2025 /

The annual Science Day at the University of Stuttgart took place on May 24. VISUS also opened its doors and invited visitors of all ages to explore the world of visualization research.

How does it feel to immerse yourself in digital worlds with the latest virtual and augmented reality devices? What new possibilities for interaction do wearables such as smartwatches offer us? How do you bring scientific visualizations to common game consoles? Visitors were able to get answers to these questions and other exciting insights at the Science Day at VISUS. Around 100 guests made their way to Allmandring 19 on May 24 to find out about current research projects at VISUS.

Some impressions from the event:

The VR and AR demos were particularly popular with visitors. Thanks to the latest haptic feedback devices, actions in a virtual environment could also be felt on the body. With the Apple Vision Pro, on the other hand, brave visitors were able to come face to face with life-size dinosaurs.
With the newly developed augmented reality app InnoVisible, visitors got to know female reserachers at the University of Stuttgart in an immersive tour. The app was developed as part of a master's thesis.
Particle simulations could be viewed on game consoles instead of PCs. Visitors navigated through complex scientific visualizations using intuitive gamepad controls.
At the exhibits of the SFB-TRR 161 “Quantitative Methods for Visual Computing”, visitors could find out more about working tools of the future or transform portrait images into small works of art using algorithms for dimensionality reduction.
Even the youngest visitors got their share of fun: In the Junior Coding Lab of the SFB-TRR 161, Lego robots could be brought to life with simple commands.

A big thank you to everyone who made the day such a successful event!
