SUMMARY:Vortrag | Prof. Sheelagh Carpendale, University of Calgary, Canada
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nSprecher\n\n\nProf. Sheelagh Carpendale\n University of Calgary, Canada\n\n\n\n\n\nTitel\n\n\n\nThe Power of Alternate Representations\n\n\n\n\n \n\nTo visualize data one of the first steps is to develop a visual representation. This\nrepresentation is a result of a mapping by which the data can be specified. Much has been said of\nabout the power of these visual representations. Simon (1981) said that solving a problem is simply\na matter of representing so as to make the solution transparent – implying that finding the right\nrepresentation solvesthe problem. Card et al. (1998) said that interactive visual representations\ncan amplify our cognition – can in effect make us smarter. In spite of this, the small box in the\nvisualization creation pipeline that signifies the development of the visual representation remains\none of the least unpacked. Through examples from my own work and others’, I will discuss the power\nand potential of alternate visual representations.\nIn this talk I will provide an alternative and expanded view. I’ll provide a very rapid overview\nof key issues with humans, interactive visualization and visual analytics, and highlight several\npoints which need to be addressed (think research opportunities). I will present three related\nchallenges I am currently working on as examples: ultra high dimensional interactive data\nvisualization; visualization theory; and coupled interactive visualization and machine\nlearning.\n\nSpeaker’s Bio\nSheelagh Carpendale is a Professor in Computer Science at the University of Calgary where she\nholds a Canada Research Chair in Information Visualization and NSERC/AITF/SMART Technologies\nIndustrial Research Chair in Interactive Technologies. She has many received awards including the\nE.W.R. NSERC STEACIE Memorial Fellowship; a BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts\nInteractive Awards - British equivalent to an Oscar); the industrially focused ASTech Innovations\nin Technology award; and the CHCCS Achievement Award, which is presented to a Canadian researcher\nwho has made a substantial contribution to the fields of computer graphics, visualization, or\nhuman-computer interaction.\nShe has served in significant international roles such as Papers, Program, or Conference Chair\nfor IEEE InfoVis, and ACM ISS (Interactive Surfaces and Spaces, formerly ITS) and has received both\nthe IEEE and ACM recognition of service awards. She is currently on the IEEE Infovis Steering\nCommittee and Chairs the ACM ISS Steering Committee. She leads the Innovations in Visualization\n(InnoVis) research group and initiated the interdisciplinary graduate program, Computational Media\nDesign. Her research draws upon her combined backgrounds in computer science and visual arts,\nbenefiting from the interdisciplinary cross-fertilization to enable the design of innovative,\npeople-centred information technologies. By studying how people interact with information both in\nwork and social practices, she works towards designing more natural, accessible and understandable\ninteractive visual representations of data. She combines information visualization, visual\nanalytics and human-computer interaction with innovative new interaction techniques to better\nsupport the everyday practices of people who are viewing, representing, and interacting with\ninformation.\n\n\n\n \nSee \nhttp://www.sfbtrr161.de/events/events.html for\nall events of the Collaborative Research Center/Transregio 161
