Research
My main research interests are in visual analytics, particularly in the field of biology. The aim of visual analytics systems is to derive insights from massive, dynamic and conflicted data. The data analysis is thereby supported through adequate visualization and highly interactive interfaces.
In the context of biology, these vast amounts of data are a result of experiments as well as simulations of processes of single molecules over expression values of genes up to modeling of whole populations. The analysis of such data is particularly difficult, as they are often heterogenous, high-dimensional and do often contain errors. Thus, it needs to be supported by adequate, modern visualization and analysis techniques.
I'm particularly interested in the development of visual analytics systems for biological networks, like gene-regulatory, signal-transduction and metabolic networks. Furthermore, diverse kinds of metadata about the involved reactions and reactants are of interest.
I started my research in visual analytics and information visualization at the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, Berlin in 2010 and wrote my diploma thesis about "Visualisation Toolkit for Contact Density Potentials within Amino Acid Neighbourhoods in Protein Structures".
Since I started to work at VISUS, I was involved in two projects that are related to biology. These include the visual analysis of genome wide association studies and the visual analysis of uncertain biochemical reaction networks.
Students who are interested in developing visualizations for different fields of application (not only biological) but particularly related to graphs/networks, data uncertainties and dynamics are encouraged to contact me. I'm supervising Diploma, Bachelor and Master theses.
