Research

My current research interests are in the transition area between Computer Vision and Computer Graphics. I’m working on methods that capture reality, model it digitally and visual representations.

I’m especially focused on capturing, representing and visualising surfaces. Humans perceive objects not only as structure and color, but to fully describe a surfaces' interaction with light all twelve dimensions of the so-called plenoptic function need to be considered: the location (2D), time (1D), the angles (2D) and the wavelength (1D) of incoming and outgoing light.

Various techniques exist to reduce this high-dimensional function and capture it. Most of them can only be used in a lab, but it can be very difficult to either bring the surface into the lab, or the lab to the surface. My research on mobile capturing setups attempts to close this gap.

I'm also offering Diploma-, Master- and Bachelor-Theses for interested students in the Visual Computing field. Possible topics include not only capturing surfaces but also Augmented Reality and controllable, digital illumination. Please contact me if you are interested in working with me!
